Music Resources
Links to important materials, as well as downloads. The downloads here are all public domain and free to use. As part of a large, world-wide network of music teachers, the importance of sharing ideas cannot be understated. Much of what we teach is not original, but rather an amalgamation of ideas that we have synthesized from previous sources.
Some of the exercises that I've written out that I use in my studio frequently I do not have posted here, but you can email me and request them. :)

As a source of public domain sheet music, the Internet Music Score Library Project is indispensable.
The Inner Game of Tennis is a book that talks about performance stress. Far from being a book about "playing tennis" the practical psychology covered in this text is a must-read for anyone working out their ability to play in front of people. Get it at Amazon.com.
Violin/Viola
Ivan Galamian's book, Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching is essential reading for any advanced violinist or teacher. Galamian's thorough understanding of the technical demands of the violin allowed him to teach students to move beyond their playing challenges in order to focus on interpretation. Get it at Amazon.com.
Elizabeth Green's Orchestra Bowings and Routines is an invaluable guide to a vast amount of knowledge that most players pick up through years of experience by playing in orchestral ensembles. Get it at Amazon.com.

The link to the left will let you purchase at-cost (currently $7.69 as of June 2018--it hasn't gone up too much over the years!) from The Book Patch a printing of J.S. Bach's Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo which includes two public domain sources, an urtext engraving as well as a facsimile of Bach's original handwritten score, in a spiral binding that lays flat...perfect on the music stand. :) For those who are asking, this work is entirely legal as the sources included are no longer under copyright (incidentally, both come from IMSLP, linked above).
If you need fingering suggestions, I'd highly recommend the International Edition of this work edited by Ivan Galamian, which also includes the reproduction of Bach's original, as well as the Schott edition edited by Henryk Szeryng. For a nice clean edition, go buy the Barenreiter Urtext. There is also an excellent free edition by Werner Icking, also available on IMSLP. |
Clarinet
The Carl Baermann Third Division is all about scales. Becoming proficient with the material in the Baermann is a practical requirement for any performing clarinetist. The work is now in public domain and you can download it from the Los Angeles Clarinet Institute at no charge. Though I usually only use Part 3/Third Division with the students, Parts 1 and 2/First and Second Divisions have lots of great material as well.
The Rose 32 Etudes and 40 Studies are now available in a single volume from Dover. They are some of the core study material for the clarinet. A free version is available from IMSLP, and it is quite usable although there is a new revised edition that "corrects" a couple of the notes.
A current work in development by composer Jim Stephenson and clarinest John Yeh of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a set of twelve works or Yehtudes! which are each titled after delightful culinary creations on Molly Yeh's food blog. Molly has just launched a new show on the Food Network, Girl Meets Farm! Anyhow, the first three have been delightful, check them out here.
